Most volunteer groups cite a lack of volunteers as one of the chief problems facing their Organizations, but the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary can point to their dedicated cadre and men and women who serve the country, day in and day out. Curtis Krazner, age 77 is a shining example of altruism. Mr. Krazner joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary July 22nd, 1944 in Elizabeth, NJ. The Auxiliary, at that time was called the Coast Guard Reserves. For sixty years, Mr. Krazner has dedicated his life to Recreational Boating Safety, the Coast Guard and his country. Mr. Krazner volunteered his time during World War II as an Air Crewman on a C-130 Hercules, based out of North Carolina. He would work his normal job Monday thru Friday, drive down to the North Carolina air base, work as a Reservist and make the trip back to New Jersey Sunday night only to repeat this cycle again on Monday. He has held leadership posts in the Auxiliary, from Flotilla and Division Commander, up to Rear Commodore (which normally supervises several Divisions). In addition to his leadership positions, he has been an educator, a recruiter for the Coast Guard Academy and a Vessel Safety Examiner (formerly called Certified Marine Examiner). Mr. Krazner was recently presented with an award of appreciation by the Director of the Auxiliary First Coast Guard District, Southern Region, CDR John M Felker, USCG and CAPT Glenn Wiltshire, the Commanding Officer of Sector New York. In part, the award thanked Mr. Krazner for his years of dedication and his patriotism. For Mr. Krazner, it was just another day in the Auxiliary.
