“BEST FLOTILLA IN THE NATION” AWARD GOES TO SANDY HOOK, NJ AUXILIARISTS

SANDY HOOK, N.J. _ U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22 has been presented with the prestigious “Best Flotilla in the Nation” award for 2003 by BoatU.S.

The award was presented at the Auxiliary’s National Convention, recently held in Costa Mesa , CA .

Flotilla 22 of District 1, Southern Region came out on top compared to the 1,200 other Auxiliary flotillas across the United States .

The Flotilla’s 30 volunteer members support U.S. Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay, and U.S. Coast Guard Activities New York in missions, including public education, boating safety, operations, and fellowship.

In 2003 Flotilla 22 members contributed over 10,500 hours of work to the Coast Guard, conducted over 815 marine dealer visits, 352 vessel safety checks, 285 marine patrol missions, 50 search and rescue missions, 225 public education missions, and 140 member training missions. Flotilla 22 also contributed over 450 hours of Coast Guard station watchstanding and nearly 70 hours of time underway on Coast Guard cutters.

“The men and women of Flotilla 22 dedicated a lot of time and expertise to help make our waterways safe for boaters,” said BoatU.S. Foundation President Ruth Wood. “We appreciate the efforts of this outstanding group,” she added.

“We work hard to support the Coast Guard, and we’re proud of our members and their achievements,” said 2005 Flotilla Commander Bill Anania.

“Everyone worked very hard in 2003, and even harder in 2004 with special events like the Republic National Convention here in our area,” said 2004 Past Flotilla Commander Len Pampaloni.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer's who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 30,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.
