Commodore Ed Sweeney

Picture Commodore Ed Sweeney is currently serving as National Directorate Commodore – Member Services, for the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He oversees the Public Affairs, Information Technology, Personnel, and Training Departments.

Ed is an active member of United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Sacramento Flotilla 35, District 11 Northern Region (which covers Northern CA, NV, and UT). Ed has been boating since the age of eleven, while growing up in New England. He has served as a Flotilla Commander, District Staff Officer-Public Affairs, and Department Chief of Public Affairs, as well as a variety of flotilla and division staff positions. Most recently, he served as the National Directorate Commodore for Recreational Boating Safety, overseeing the Boating, Education, and Vessel Examination Departments within the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Commodore Sweeney is a graduate of Bentley College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy. He also holds a Master of Science in Taxation from Bryant University, and attended graduate business school at California State University, Sacramento.

His Coast Guard qualifications include the TRIDENT device (M pro Pin), coxswain (small boat commander), Recreational Boating Safety device, vessel examiner, instructor, marine visitor, watch-stander, and Ferry Inspector. He has a love for boating and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and has received a Letter of Commendation from the National Water Safety Congress, and the Distinguished Public Service Award for 2004 from the CA Department of Boating and Waterways. He also received a Recreational Boating Safety Award of Excellence in 2002 for the Pacific Region from the U.S. Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. His other awards include the Auxiliary Meritorious Service Award, Award of Operational Merritt, Auxiliary Commendation Award (five), Auxiliary Achievement Award (three), Coast Guard Unit Commendation (3 times), Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation (twice), and Meritorious Team Commendation (12 times), the public affairs award, as well as numerous other Auxiliary awards.

A native of Warwick, Rhode Island, Commodore Sweeney currently resides in Sacramento California with his wife Leanne, who is also actively involved in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
